Introduction

Have you ever set goals you wanted to achieve and you failed to do so in the end? I’m looking at you, new years eve resolutions!

I surely did and failed miserably. Over and over and over again, I did everything people tell you, made SMART goals, started strong but lost my focus after a while.

Last year my goal was to benchpress 100kg – it’s a huge milestone for me. I tried it and got to around 92kg before the end of 2019 – my starting weight was 65kg. That’s not very impressive – but what happened? My goal was just a number – every day the 100kg lingered above the gym, never to be crushed.

In this post, I want to show you my new goal-setting rule, process-driven goals, a way that will help you crush your new year’s resolutions or any of the goals you set for yourself.

It’s not the successor of SMART goals, it rather goes hand in hand and you will find out why down below. This goal setting guide will help you achieve a lot more by focusing on the process.

What are process-driven goals?

Process-driven goals describe the saying of “The way is the goal”. Instead of chasing after a RESULT, you go after the PROCESS of doing everything you can to achieve your goal.

How does this translate to goal setting?

Given the goal of bench-pressing 100kg, I said above, I didn’t start it all over again for 2020.

Instead of just going after the 100kg mark, I aimed for going to the gym regularly and exercise. When I do that often enough, everything will fall into place.

Why this system will make you stick to your goals

If you set a big goal for the whole year, you know you won’t reach it in quite some time. Yes, you have your smaller sub-goals but there isn’t as much satisfaction reaching them than the main goal, or is it?

This can put you off quickly. And one day will be two days, then a week then a month – now it’s lost anyway so let’s sit on the couch all day.

But not having this pressure of reaching a big goal but just showing up, which will RESULT in the big goal in the end anyway, you will do that.

Is a SMART goal bad?!

Hell no, it’s not. Actually I like to combine both systems into one.

SMART: Bench-press 100kg by first October 2020 (thanks corona!)

Process: Go to the gym 4 times a week at 5 a.m. and use the 5/3/1 program.

The combination of these two things helps me a lot – but my main focus is on the process rather than on the results.

In the end, you want your process to yield results – and it’s not helping if you go to the gym with fuckaroundtitis and don’t really do the work, so some kind of RESULT has to be in place to keep your process meaningful.

Conclusion

With this system you will:

  • get closer to your full potential
  • it will be much easier by focusing on the way instead of the goal itself
  • you will not get demotivated because you don’t hit big milestones right away
